This project took us nearly 2 years to complete. How did Precious Lifetime Memories come up with this?
My first precious was born on this meaningful day: FRIDAY (5), YEAR (2013), MONTH (1) AND DAY (4) = 5201314 ♥
When she arrived in this world, the first thing the doctor said was… “It’s a girl”… and that she had Pre-axial polydactyly on her right hand—also known as thumb duplication. I was depressed upon hearing that and started to worry for her future. I was worried that when she enters school and society, people would judge or label her with unpleasant nicknames and was afraid that she would be treated differently because of the abnormality. True enough, she has been disturbed by her current schoolmates and I fear for her.
The doctor proposed to have the duplicated thumb removed as, likewise, he was worried about her. It was a tough decision to make, fighting against mixed feelings with my family and friends supporting the doctor’s proposal as well. I couldn’t imagine the pain that my baby would have to endure through the surgery at only 4 months old. I felt that it was God’s plan for me to give birth to a baby so unique, thus I decided against removing her extra finger. She is so special to me and I wouldn’t want my baby any less.
When my little girl was born, sadly, she also had a few birth defects—something which I never mentioned to many people. Due to that, I wasn’t able to breastfeed her for a long period of time. After my 2nd birth—my baby son, it was where everything started… From then, I got a passion to start doing Breastmilk Jewellery, telling myself that one day, I will make create 3D Hand & Feet Sculpture using Breast Milk. Hence, I have been storing up all my Breast Milk since my second pregnancy.
And after nearly 2 years, we finally succeeded! My wish of my daughter’s hand was being able to be made into a 3D sculpture came true. This is one of the reason why it’s named as “Heirloom Keepsake”. When she grows older, she might want to undergo surgery to have her duplicate thumb removed. However, we both know that her 3D hand sculpture still exists in this world, where she and I can to hold on to for a lifetime of precious memories.
